Dissent Projects was proud to have collaborated with St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group (https://www.stjohneyehospital.org/) in the making of the award-winning documentary “Eyes of St. John”.

The film highlights the tireless effort made every day, across the Israeli-Palestinian divide, by St. John’s team of medical staff who provide vital eye care in a region of the world where blindness is ten times higher than in the West.

From a brief history of the Group, which operates from its Hospital in East Jerusalem, the focus shifts to the staff and the high level of training they receive, then to the patients themselves who tell their individual stories of successful treatment against the odds.

The film also shows the work of the satellite eye care clinics and mobile outreach units going to the back and beyond throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip where dedicated teams of medical staff provide life-changing treatment to patients for a variety of symptoms.

Despite the many geopolitical problems and conflict in their area of operation, St John manages to build bridges between Israelis and Palestinians while providing expert care regardless of ethnicity, religion or ability to pay.

The film climaxes with powerful close ups of the intricate and delicate surgical procedures performed in one of Saint John’s operating rooms, leaving a vivid, symbolic image of the profound impact their presence has in the region.
